上一节课，我们讲到，丑小鸭终于离开了那只公猫，自以为是的母鸡，和那栋温暖、安全但是愚昧的小屋，来到真实的世界里，这里虽然没有那么暖和，但是他的身边没有蠢人，在这里他还是很孤单，经历了风雨和寒冬过后，他见到一群美丽的天鹅，并且也朝着它们大叫了一声。

小朋友们，丑小鸭为什么会朝着天上的白天鹅大叫一声呢？大家好好考虑一下，在下方留言。

那么在今天的音频资料里，我们要讲的是关于[the ugly duckling 丑小鸭]、[a woman 一个妇人]、[her husband and children 她的丈夫和孩子]的故事。

地点：a farmhouse 一个农舍。丑小鸭一个人在湖面上过冬，差点被冻死，被一个农夫救回家以后，因为害怕人类会伤害他，又逃了出来，然后春天来了，丑小鸭发现自己可以飞了。

《THE UGLY DUCKLING》

带着问题听故事，第一个问题：为什么这只丑小鸭经历了这么多磨难，还活了下来？
第二个问题： 为什么丑小鸭那么怕人？

下面是双语故事，请认真听。

• Could he ever 他有没有可能 forget those beautiful happy birds 忘记那些美丽的,快乐的鸟儿呢？
• and when at last they were out of his sight 当最后那些鸟儿消失不见的时候, he dived under the water 他潜入水中, and rose again 然后冒出来 almost beside himself with excitement 感到几乎就在身旁，很激动.
• He knew not 他不知道 the names of these birds 这些鸟儿的名字, nor where they had flown 也不知道他们飞去了哪里,
• but he felt towards them 但是他感觉他们很亲切 as he had never felt for any other bird in the world 他以前从来没有对世界上任何一只鸟儿有过这种感觉.
• He was not envious of these beautiful creatures 他并不嫉妒这些美丽的生灵, but wished 但是心里也希望 to be as lovely as they 可以和他们一样可爱.
• Poor ugly creature 可怜的丑东西,
• how gladly he would have lived even with the ducks 本来，即使是和鸭子们一起生活，他也可以活得很快乐的 had they only given him encouragement 如果，那些鸭子当初给了他一些鼓励的话.
• The winter grew colder and colder 冬天变得越来越冷;
• he was obliged to swim about on the water 他必须在水面上不停地游 to keep it from freezing 才能不让湖面冻住,
• but every night 但是每个晚上 the space on which he swam 他能游泳的空间 became smaller and smaller 都会变得越来越小.
• At length 最后 it froze so hard 冰冻非常厉害 that the ice in the water crackled as he moved 以至于当他划水的时候，水里有冰，不断被它撞破
• and the duckling had to paddle with his legs as well as he could 小鸭子不得不拼命用双腿划水,
• to keep the space from closing up 避免冰面合上.
• He became exhausted 他精疲力尽
• at last 最终, and lay still 停了下来 and helpless 六神无主,
• frozen fast in the ice 立刻就被冻在了冰里.
• Early in the morning 第二天清早,
• a peasant 一个农夫, who was passing by 在湖边经过, saw what had happened 看见了湖中的景象.
• He broke the ice in pieces with his wooden shoe 他用木屐把冰打碎,
• and carried the duckling home 把小鸭子捡回了家 to his wife 交给了妻子.
• The warmth 温暖 revived the poor little creature 复苏了可怜的小东西;
• but when the children 但是当孩子们 wanted to play with him 想和他一起玩的时候,
• the duckling thought 小鸭子以为 they would do him some harm 他们会伤害自己;
• so he started up in terror 所以恐惧地站了起来,
• fluttered into the milk-pan 扑进了牛奶盆,
• and splashed the milk about the room 把牛奶溅满房间.

• Then the woman clapped her hands 妇人开始拍手, which frightened him still more 这更是把他给吓坏了.
• He flew first into the butter-cask 他先是飞进了奶油桶,
• then into the meal-tub 然后飞进粮食缸,
• and out again 又出来了.
• What a condition he was in 他真是搞得天下大乱!
• The woman screamed 妇人气得大喊,
• and struck at him with the tongs 拿东西扔他;
• the children laughed and screamed 孩子们大笑着、喊叫着, and tumbled over each other 你追我赶, in their efforts to catch him 都想抓住他;
• but luckily 但是幸运地 he escaped 他逃走了.
• The door stood open 门当时开着; the poor creature 可怜的东西 could just manage to slip out 正好可以从那里溜出去 among the bushes 来到树丛里, and lie down 躺了下来 quite exhausted 精疲力尽 in the newly fallen snow 倒在一地新鲜的雪地里.
• It would be very sad , were I to relate all the misery and privations which the poor little duckling endured during the hard winter 在接下来的整个严冬里，这只可怜的小鸭子所经历的那些悲惨境遇，想想就让人难过。
• but 但是 when it had passed 当严冬过去之后,
• he found himself lying one morning in a moor amongst the rushes 有一个早晨，他在草丛中，发现了一个久违的解冻的湖.
• He felt the warm sun shining 他感觉到了温暖的阳光在闪耀,
• and heard the lark singing 听到了云雀的歌唱,
• and saw that all around was beautiful spring 看到周遭春意盎然.
• Then the young bird 然后这只年轻的鸟儿 felt that his wings 感觉到他的翅膀 were strong 变得强壮了,
• as he flapped them against his sides 他往两旁扑打着双翅,
• and rose high into the air 发现自己竟然腾空而起.

丑小鸭内心是很顽强的，他虽然总是孤身一鹅，但总是努力为自己创造活下去的条件。

my opinion is:
大概因为他小时候，那个喂鸡的姑娘看到他丑，老是踢他。
