A guess about cities, apartments, and small towns twenty years from now — and which parts of daily life would feel new, and which would feel familiar
I want to be honest with you before we start. Nobody knows exactly what cities and homes will look like in 2046. Twenty years is a long time. A breakthrough in cheap energy, a sudden jump in AI, a global pandemic, a war, or a big climate shock could change the picture a lot. It is also possible that 2046 will feel surprisingly familiar — your grandmother’s apartment kitchen mixed with new tools you have never seen. So this article is a guess. I want you to see how the guess is built.
When I think about predictions, I sort the forces into three speeds. Some forces change very fast: AI, batteries, building materials, communication. Some change very slowly: human bodies need light and air, families want to be near each other, cities take a long time to rebuild. And some forces change suddenly when something triggers them: a heat wave that breaks records, a new train line, a sudden rule from the government, a financial crisis. For each claim in this article, I will try to say which speed I think is doing the work, and where I might be wrong.
The big picture I want to explore is this: by 2046, the home most Chinese teenagers grow up in might still look familiar at first glance. What stays the same
Before I get to the changes, let me name what is unlikely to change. Walls keep heat in and out. People want a quiet bedroom and a kitchen with someone they love in it. What might feel different are the small parts. I expect most apartments to have very good air filters by 2046, partly because the slow force of air pollution worry has not gone away, partly because the technology has gotten cheap. I expect cooling to be more important than heating in many cities — climate change is a slow force, and Chinese summers are already getting longer. New apartment windows might filter heat the way sunglasses filter light. Old apartments might get a layer of insulation (a material that keeps heat in or out) added to the outside, paid for partly by the government as part of energy-saving programs.
I expect every apartment to have an “AI corner” of some kind — a small device or screen that handles routines: turning lights down at night, ordering groceries, helping the youngest child with English homework, reminding the oldest grandparent to take medicine. This is a fast-lane prediction. The exact shape of these tools is hard to guess, but their presence I am quite sure of. By 2026, the early versions are already in many homes.
Could I be wrong about all this? Yes. If a major recession or war hits China between now and 2046, the upgrades I described might not happen, and apartments could look much like they do today. If AI tools turn out to be more annoying than useful in a real home — beeping all the time, breaking constantly — families might unplug them. The “AI corner” is a medium-confidence guess.
Multi-generational housing

It could also mean a slightly more crowded apartment than your parents grew up in, and an evening dinner table with five generations at it on Spring Festival. The mood of these households, if they form, would probably be a mix of warmth and friction. Slow human truths do not change: people who love each other still get tired of each other.
I expect new buildings to be designed with this in mind. Some apartments could come in a “1.5 home” version — one main apartment for a young family, plus a small attached studio for a grandparent, with its own door but a shared hallway. The neighborhood: the “fifteen-minute district”

(If I am wrong here, it will be because the technology turns out to be harder than the optimists guess, or because regulations stay strict.)
I am less sure about flying taxis (eVTOLs — electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles, basically big drones for people). The technology should work by 2046. Whether they become common transport for ordinary people, or stay an expensive toy for the rich, depends on rules and on how cities decide to handle the noise. My guess: they exist, but most teenagers in 2046 still ride the metro.
Climate adaptation in cities
Climate change is a slow force, but its effects are already visible. By 2046, cities will have to adapt more — there is no way around it. I expect Chinese cities to do better than most. The reasons are political and practical: the central government can move quickly when it decides to, and Chinese engineers have a strong record of building large infrastructure projects.
What might that look like? More trees and parks (sometimes called “sponge city” features — designs that let rain soak in instead of flooding the streets). More white or reflective rooftops to cool buildings. Underground heat shelters in the hottest neighborhoods. Air-conditioned bus stops. More water storage for dry years. Better forecasting of typhoons and floods. None of this is exotic; the pieces exist already in 2026. The question is how widely they spread.
I am medium-confident that cities will mostly keep up. I am less confident that everyone in those cities will benefit equally. Wealthier districts will likely get the upgrades first. Older buildings in poorer neighborhoods may get them last. This is a slow force we already see clearly in 2026.
Privacy and the watchful city
Cities in 2046 will probably have many more cameras and sensors than they do today, both inside and outside buildings. How that feels depends a lot on who you are and what you want to do. The slow force here is human: people want safety and they want freedom, and the two pull against each other. The fast force is technology, which keeps making both surveillance and privacy tools more powerful.
I will not pretend to know how this debate gets resolved. I think it gets re-resolved many times, in many cities, with many small fights and rules along the way. A 14-year-old in 2046 will probably feel this in small ways: a school door that recognizes your face, a building that knows when you came home, a phone that can prove where you have been all day. Some of these you will like. Some you will not.
Smaller cities and the countryside
So far I have written mostly about big cities. Most Chinese teenagers in 2046 will probably still live in big cities, but a growing share could live in smaller cities or even in towns and villages — partly because remote work has changed where people can live, partly because some bigger cities are too expensive.
In smaller cities, I expect the changes I described to arrive more slowly, but to arrive. The fifteen-minute district is actually easier to build in a town than in a megacity, because towns are smaller to begin with. Multi-generational housing has never really left smaller places. AI tools are cheap once they are made, so they spread to villages within a few years of arriving in the cities.
In the countryside, the picture is harder to guess. If high-speed internet, healthcare, and good schools all reach villages by 2046, country life could look attractive again to some young families. If they do not, the slow force of urban migration continues. I lean slightly toward “country life gets more attractive than it was in 2026,” but only slightly. Government policy in the 2030s will decide a lot of this.
Who gets left off the map
The picture above describes a 2046 that works for maybe a billion or so Chinese people — those who live in cities or well-connected towns and have steady incomes. For others, the upgrades arrive late or not at all. Migrant workers may live in older buildings without the new air filters and cooling. Rural elderly without nearby grandchildren may not have anyone to set up the AI corner. Climate-vulnerable neighborhoods may get the heat shelter only after a tragedy makes the news.
Globally, the gap between 2046 China and many lower-income countries could widen, not shrink. The technology spreads, but the money to install it does not always follow. (This is a guess, and I would be glad to be wrong about it.)
The “fifteen-minute district” is a privilege right now, and may still be one in 2046. The political fights of the late 2040s about housing and transport will really be fights about who gets access to this redesigned daily life.
Conclusion
This whole article is a guess. The most striking thing I am guessing about 2046 is not that homes get smarter or that taxis drive themselves. It is that the shape of daily life — what you can reach by foot, who lives in the next room, how the air feels in summer — could quietly shift in ways that add up to something different. The walls of your apartment in 2046 may look much like the walls in 2026. What is just outside those walls is the part most likely to feel new.
I lean toward this picture because the forces driving it — fast technology, slow demographic change, slow human needs — all seem to point in similar directions. But I could be wrong in many ways.
